All You Need To Know About Spirit Airlines Baggage Size

Spirit Airlines Carry on rules

So many people have horrible experiences with Spirit Airlines, and many of those concerns are surrounding Spirit Airlines baggage size. Spirit is not like your average airline, so you must know what their rules are BEFORE you get to the airport so you can have a stress-free flying experience.

Spirit Airlines Baggage Size

So what size is acceptable and free on Spirit? Your carry on bag must be smaller than 18x14x8. Basically the size of a laptop bag or small purse.

Any bags, I repeat, any bag that is bigger than those dimensions listed above and do not fit entirely into the sizer box will need to be checked. Why? Because that is their policy. Spirit is a no-nonsense airline that gives you extremely cheap fares. You do not get any of the perks you get with other airlines. And because they don’t have tons of big carry on bags, boarding is faster.

18x14x8. There is no wiggle room here. That is the acceptable Spirit Airlines baggage size which won’t cost you a thing. This applies to one carry on item.

Did you know that only one personal item is included when you fly on Spirit? That’s right. Just one. That personal item, including the handles and wheels,  must fit in the smaller sizer box. You absolutely must pay for more bags if the bag you want to carry is oversized.

Most airlines allow one carry on and one personal item. THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH SPIRIT. If you bring more than 1 personal item, you will be charged.

What do they consider a personal item? A laptop bag, purse, umbrella, camera, infant diaper bag, assistive devices, outer garments (e.g., coats, hats and wraps). Basically anything you have grown accustomed to traveling with you for free.

Neck and head pillows can be carried on the aircraft as long as they fit completely in your personal item bag.

In some cases wheelchairs, car seats and strollers may be checked or carried on free of charge.

You can save yourself some money by paying for your checked bag online BEFORE your flight. Bags purchased online are cheaper than those purchased at the airport because they don’t require an agent and don’t slow down check-in.

If you are accessing your reservation more than 24 hours prior to departure, simply go to the My Trips tab and follow the instructions to access your reservation. You can then click the “Add Bags” link to purchase additional bags.

What if you want to make  changes with less than 24 hours before departure? go to the Online Check-in tab and follow the instructions to access your reservation.  You can then click the “Add Bags” link to purchase additional bags. Remember if you buy your bags in advance you will save money, as it costs more to check your bags when you check in.

Of course you can add your checked bags at the airport, or you can call their Reservations Center. However, these bags will cost you more.

Bags purchased online are cheaper than those purchased at the airport because they don’t require assistance from a Customer Service Agent.

The carry on rules also apply to non-motorized/non-battery operated skateboards. These items can be considered as a  personal item. The item has to:

  • Meet Spirit’s carry-on or personal item size dimensions, and
  • Be stowed with wheels up to prevent rolling.

You must stow the skateboard wheels up, preferably under the seat. Skateboards count towards your bag allowance and carry-on bag charges apply, as applicable. A limited liability release form must be signed as well.

Breast pumps and baby formula are allowed to be carried onto an aircraft and don’t count against your carry-on allowance.
