As you may know, I love public transportation when it’s done right. I think it’s so great that you can get on a train or a metro and get to where you need to go and SkyTrain in Vancouver is way up there for good transportation. I was visiting my friends who live just outside of Vancouver but it only took me maybe 10 minutes to walk to the nearest station. When you get to the ticket kiosk, it will look like this:
If you aren’t sure where you need to go, there is a map on each kiosk to help you figure things out.
I used SkyTrain on two separate days, I bought a one way both times as I knew I wouldn’t be doing enough train travel to merit a day pass. But if you think you will be hopping on and off the train then a day pass is a better buy for you. Make sure you keep your ticket as you may be asked to show proof of purchase.
I like it when a ticket shows you exactly what direction the ticket is supposed to go. You can use the same ticket for a roundtrip if you travel back within an hour and a half. For instance, the second time I rode the train I went into Chinatown. I had to go back a bit earlier than I planned and I was able to use the same ticket I used to get there because my hour and a half wasn’t up. Don’t do what I did on my first day riding which was I didn’t realize the hour and a half rule until 10 minutes after my one way ticket expired. Yeah, that was fun.
The trains are colorful and the stations are very clean. I didn’t see any homeless people in the stations and everywhere I walked was very well lit.
One of the best things about the SkyTrain is there is no driver so you can sit in the front of each car and get a great view.
SkyTrain is a great and cheap way to get around the city, so if you are going to be in Vancouver, try it out and let me know what you think.
