If you are planning a trip to Vietnam, depending on your nationality you will need a visa. As of this posting Americans need a Visa to enter the country and will not be admitted without one.
You do not want to make all of your plans only to find out once you get to the airport that you need a visa to enter the country. This picture was taken on October 13th, 2016. This info shown was valid at the time and taken at the airport in Hanoi:
I used a company called Vietnam-visa.com and it was very easy. They provide Visas upon arrival at the airport and it’s very simple to do. Here is what I did:
1. filled out the application online.
I followed directions and received my paperwork a few days later. However, I didn’t realize that the actual visa approval wasn’t sent, I only received part of my paperwork which is why I wasn’t allowed to fly into Hanoi when I originally wanted to, I had to spend the night in Japan then fly out the next day. So, be sure you have the Visa approval letter as this is the paper you need to enter the country. After I submitted my application I received this:
2. Follow the directions on the follow up e-mail
As you can see from the screenshot above there are 2 things you must do. You need pictures for your visa and the correct amount of cash for your visa (they do not provide change). I only needed a single entry as I knew I wouldn’t be leaving the country during my visit. However, if you will be leaving and returning to Vietnam make sure to get a multiple entry visa.
3. Wait for visa to arrive via e-mail.
Verify you have BOTH the approval letter and Vietnamese application then print them both out, apply your picture and you’re done! See screenshot below.
4. Be patient once you get to the airport.
There is a huge counter where you turn in your paperwork and your cash. Pack your patience as it may take you an hour to get your passport back (you turn in your passport once you turn in your paperwork). There is a seating area for you to wait (see pic below).
5. Enjoy Vietnam!
There you have it! Getting a visa for Vietnam is easy, just follow the directions and you’ll be fine!
