For a whole year I posted daily travel tips and now that year is over but here are the tips for you! Is there anything I missed?

November 26, 2013

Are you taking a long flight? You may get stuck behind a crying baby so please bring earplugs. You will be very happy with the noise they block out.

November 25, 2013

If you have to use the phone while you travel, call your cell phone carrier and get an international calling plan. It may still be expensive but it will be cheaper than no plan at all.

November 24, 2013

If you want to call home while you’re traveling, think about using Skype instead of calling.

November 23, 2013

If you have a tendency to get ill while traveling and like to eat fruit, think about only eating fruit with a thick skin. Bananas and oranges are less likely to be contaminated with unclean water than apples and grapes.

November 22, 2013

If you’re going to a country where it’s not safe for you to drink the water, don’t get your drink with ice.

November 21, 2013

If you have a week to spend in Europe, think about staying in one city and really exploring it instead of trying to see too many different cities. You end up not seeing anything really and being super tired everyday.

November 20, 2013

Don’t expect an American breakfast while you are traveling. Most countries do not do breakfast the way it is in the USA so be prepared for that.

November 19, 2013

Do you travel with a backpack? Try not to pack it completely full, you will be much better off if you pack lightly. A backpack can get really heavy very quickly.

November 17, 2013

Are you afraid to fly? Maybe get a couple of drinks before you fly to relax you a little bit. It takes the edge off and helps you stay calm. But don’t get drunk, a gate agent can stop you from boarding if he or she feels you can’t fly.

November 16, 2013

No one but you needs to see all of the cash you have in your wallet. Do not show your money when you are about to purchase something. Take out your money discretely so as not to bring unwanted attention to yourself.

November 15, 2013

If you are traveling and a group of kids come up and start talking to you, just be cautious. They may be trying to pick your pockets.

November 14, 2013

If you can avoid a connecting flight, please do. It’s always better to fly directly to your destination.

November 13, 2013

It would be a good idea to call and verify any reservations you have to make sure everything is all set. I called once and even though I had a confirmation code they didn’t have record of my reservation and I had to find new accommodations.

November 12, 2013

Many people say rolling your clothes save space. I don’t agree with them Use packing cubes and you will save yourself so much space, time, and energy on packing.

November 11, 2013

If you are traveling with medicine, the name on the bottle should match the name on the ticket. They may not always check but if they do and you don’t have the correct name, you may be in for a bit of a hassle.

November 10, 2013

When people are finished with their magazines on airplanes they sometimes leave them in the seat pocket in front of them. Have you ever thought about taking one of them as you walk out of the plane? I’ve done it before, it’s going to be thrown away and there is nothing wrong with getting a free magazine!

If you plan on renting a car while traveling, make sure you know the rules of the state or country. In some cities you can’t turn right on red, in some you have to have a special gadget to drive in the HOV lanes. Just know the rules before you get behind the wheel.

November 05, 2013

If you buy more than 3ounces from Duty Free and have a connecting flight, make sure to put the item in your checked bag when you land or else you will have to throw your bottle in the trash when you go through security again in your connecting city.

November 04, 2013

When packing your carryon, think about packing a plastic bag filled with all the things you want with your while flying then when it’s time to board, you don’t have to stand in the aisle looking for all of your stuff. You can grab your plastic bag (and it can be a bigger one) filled with your goodies and not hold up traffic in the aisle.

November 03, 2013

If you are flying with your infant child, you are allowed to bring a carseat for them to sit in while flying. It’s safer for them.

August 22, 2013

This may sound obvious but the more you blend in with the crowd the less you stand out. Check the way the locals dress and try to blend in, if possible (my Black skin makes me stand out so no blending in for me!)

August 4, 2013

January 12, 2013

When in a foreign country and you want to eat, stay clear of any restaurant that has the “English spoken here” sign in the window. The most authentic meals usually come from the restaurants where no one speaks your language and you need your dictionary to read the menu.

January 11, 2013

Check the list that the U.S. government puts out regarding countries that Americans shouldn’t visit, then heed the warning.

January 10, 2013

It’s good to know where your embassy is in the country you’re visiting. You never know what may happen, it’s always good to know where you would need to go in case of an emergency.

January 9, 2013

Bring an adapter in order to charge your electronics. Your American plug won’t work in a foreign country, or the plug from your country won’t work in America.

January 8, 2013

Changing money at the airport is usually the worst place to do it. Look around the city for the best deals, making sure to check the fee for changing money (each place charges a commission).

January 7, 2013

Always have a bit of local currency when you travel to another country. Not every place takes credit cards and it’s better to have money and not need it than the other way around.

January 6, 2013

When I leave for a long period, I put a vacation hold on my mail or have someone come to my place and pick up my mail. Either way, you don’t want your mailbox overflowing with mail, that’s a dead giveaway that you are gone and that your home is empty.

January 5, 2013

Train travel can be an inexpensive way to get form one city to another if you are visiting more than one city/country on your vacation. You also don’t have to worry about weight restrictions for your bags.

January 4, 2013

When choosing a flight, pick the earliest flight possible. You won’t have as many people in security, the flights aren’t usually as full and sometimes those flights can be cheaper.

January 3, 2013

Always know the emergency number (it’s 911 in North America) in the country you are visiting.

January 2, 2013

Before you book your hotel, see what the street looks like on Google Street View. Go to Google, click maps, then type address, there should be a picture to the left where you can see a 360 degree street view.

January 1, 2013

It’s January 1st! 2013! Can you believe it? No time like the present to start planning some fabulous trip. A weekend getaway, a day trip, a family vacation for a week, whatever you decide, start planning now!

December 31, 2012

When I’m traveling and I take a taxi home, I ask the driver to not leave until I get into the door. I am not scared when I travel but I am always cautious.

December 30, 2012

If your vacation requires gloves, think about getting some hand warmers to go inside of them. I use those all the time when I travel in winter and they really work. I get mine for Walmart and Target has them sometimes as well.

December 29, 2012

Getting refills on sodas is typically a North American thing and not normally done in other parts of the world. Keep that in mind when you head to eat and you keep ordering your soda.

December 28, 2012

A pharmacy in a foreign country can be one of your best resources. Many times you can buy medicine that normally requires a prescription in the States. Before you try and see a doctor, head to the pharmacy, they may be able to give you what you need.

December 27, 2012

Even though it’s more convenient to get a spa treatment at your hotel, it’s usually also more expensive. Ask a local while you are exploring the city if they know any good places, or you could always Google it.

December 26, 2012

To prevent any unwanted critters from coming home with you in your suitcase, don’t leave it on the floor. Store it on the shelf in the closet or on the luggage rack in your hotel room, if there is one provided.

December 25, 2012

Wherever your travels take you today, please be safe and enjoy your time with your family and friends.

December 24, 2012

If you’re flying out today or tomorrow, please try not to use the seat in front of you to get up. Many people put both hands on the front seat which pulls the seat back and disturbs the person sitting in that seat. You can get up without doing that and the person sitting in front of you will be very thankful.

December 23, 2012

If you’re in a foreign country and you find a DVD you want to buy, make sure it is compatible with your DVD player. All DVD’s have a numbered region, normally found on the bottom of the back of the DVD box. America is region 1.

December 22, 2012

Leave a copy of your itinerary with a loved one when you leave. Someone other than the people you are traveling with should know where you are at all times.

December 21, 2012

Before you leave for your destination, be sure to check the weather. Even if your destination is known for a certain type of weather, please verify the temperature before you pack your bags.

 December 20, 2012

Check to see if it’s cheaper to buy a multiple day pass or a pack of tickets for the metro/bus instead of buying a single ticket every time.

December 19, 2012

Before you put your snow globe in your carryon bag, please check with TSA to see if the size of your globe is acceptable.

December 18, 2012

If you check a bag, it is more likely to be mishandled during holiday season. Write your name, your contact phone number, and your final destination on a piece of paper and put that right on top of your clothes in your luggage & in an outside pocket. If the white tag on your baggage handle comes off (which they sometimes do), you can still be contacted.

December 17, 2012

For US residents, if you or your family members have disabilities and/or medical conditions, you can call 1-855-787-2227 72 hours before traveling with any questions regarding screening or security procedures.

December 16, 2012

If you are flying with gifts to take to your loved ones, PLEASE DO NOT WRAP THEM. TSA will have to unwrap them if the package is deemed suspicious. You can easily get wrapping paper when you land, or, if it fits, you can put rolls of paper in your suitcase.

December 15, 2012

Christmas season is upon us so traveling will take a bit longer. Please arrive at the airport at least 2 hours for domestic flights, 3 for international.

December 14, 2012

Even more so around Christmas season, you wouldn’t believe how many people leave their ipads, computers, iPods etc. behind on a plane. Please label your electronics so if they get left behind, you can be contacted. Make sure to have your email and phone number as part of the contact info.

December 13, 2012

As a single woman, I NEVER have my hotel room or apartment rental on the ground floor. I think it is much safer to be a bit higher, and it’s less likely that someone will try and break into your space.

December 12, 2012

If you are a coffee fan, buy some coffee in your foreign destination and bring it home. A bag of coffee makes for a great gift for someone (especially if the coffee bag has a foreign language on it) and it’s also a great reminder to you of your trip if you buy one for yourself!

December 11, 2012

Take a business card from your hotel or take a picture of your apartment and the street you are staying on. If you happen to get turned around, you can hop in a taxi or a bus, show your pic or your hotel business card and be taken back home safely.

December 10, 2012

I never delete my SD cards. I download my photos and store the card in my home. If something happens to your computer, your vacation photos will be gone forever. SD cards are not that expensive now so keep buying them, you will be glad you did.

December 9, 2012

If you’re traveling to a country where you don’t speak the language, carry a small dictionary with you (on my trip to Russia I bought a small Russian/English dictionary). It comes in handy when you need help and can’t speak the language.

December 8, 2012

I always bring an “In case I get ill” kit. I pack something for headache, stomach ache, cuts, minor burns, indigestion, diarrhea, motion sickness, etc. It’s always best to have it and not need it than need it and have no idea how to get it in a foreign country.

December 7, 2012

Take a pair of socks with you on the plane. If you get cold (I ALWAYS get cold on a plane) you have your socks…instant warmth!

December 6, 2012

If you check a bag, pack one outfit in your carry-on. That way, if your bag gets lost, you will have an outfit to wear the next day.

December 5, 2012

Since I always try to rent apartments when I travel, I bring instant oatmeal packs from home to eat in the mornings. Oatmeal isn’t a universal thing and the packs don’t take much room in my bag.

December 4, 2012

Try not to look too much like a tourist when you are traveling. Tennis shoes, fanny packs (yes, people still wear them), and walking with a map fully unfolded are a few things to avoid.

December 3, 2012

Depending on where you’re traveling, it may be cheaper to buy a phone once you arrive at your destination. I have done this in several countries and usually incoming calls are free so your friends and family can call you (they pay) and you don’t pay a thing.

December 2, 2012

Bringing back gifts? Try putting the smallest bill in a frame and giving that as a gift. Many countries have colorful money that is actually really pretty and would look lovely framed.

December 1, 2012

Try not to plan your connecting flight times too closely together. Air travel is unpredictable and if you don’t give yourself enough time to for uncertainties, you may end up missing your flight.

November 30, 2012

While sitting at your gate, try not to listen to your music or watch your movie with the volume too loud. People have missed gate change information and/or missed their flights because they were too enthralled with their technology.
